Home Students Classroom Pages Grade 1 - Mrs. Durant 1D September News

1D September News

It was wonderful seeing all the parents on Monday evening.  I enjoyed all the positive attitudes!  I realize that I met everyone at "Meet the Teachers" Day, but that day was very overwhelming.  Monday night seemed so much more personal and comfortable.

It has been a very busy two weeks in First grade.  We're becoming better acquainted and are really enjoying each others' company.  We have started the new reading program.  I must say that it is very impressive.  There are so many skills to cover.  We will be working very hard - and loving it!!  Our first reading (and spelling) words went home on the homework assignment sheet.  Please spend a few minutes each day on reading and spelling these words.  We are doing the first Spelling unit together in school.  Starting next week (Sept. 19-23), the spelling pack will be part of their nightly homework.

We have completed our Kindergarten review in Math and have started a new chapter.  For the remainder of September, we will be working on ordering  numbers to 30, greater than and less than, and ordinals.  Next month, we will start our work on addition and subtraction facts.  This is a very important skill that the children will need to master.  Parents - think about making or purchasing flash cards!!

Our Weekly Reader magazine and National Geographic are wonderful in enhancing Social Studies and Science skills.  After we discuss each magazine, they will be going home.  Take a few moments and talk about them with your child.  They love to talk about what they are learning.  This week we will be discussing the differences between living and non-living things.

If you have any concerns, please contact me.  I will get back to you as soon as I am able.  I hope that you are enjoying this wonderful weather.  Too bad we can't bottle it and uncork it in February!!

     HAPPY FALL  !!           Mrs. Durant
