Welcome to First Grade! First Grade is a wonderful grade. The children are fun, creative, challenging and so eager to learn. The most rewarding part of this grade is having all the children reading and writing by the end of the year. The love of reading is the goal in my classroom! 

I have had the honor of being a First Grade teacher at St. Christopher's for over 30 years! I have had the pleasure of teaching the children of my former students! My husband and I live in Nashua and I have two adult daughters. We have two cats!

of our friends, old and new, a wonderful Summer filled with friends and family!

May is Marvelous in 1M!

May is marvelous with so many things.

We look forward to what May brings...

RELIGION...May is the month of Mary, our Mother in Heaven.  We will be saying a decade of the rosary daily.  We have our May Procession.  We will also be learning about the parts of the Mass.

MATH...We continue on 2 digit addition and will start on 2 digit subtraction.  We continue with story problems and looking for key words that help us know if a problem is solved using addition or subtraction.  Learning about shapes and attributes of shapes is discussed.  Continued practice on knowing our addition and subtraction facts to 12 and beyond is continuing!

SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES... In Science we will learn about Summer weather.  We will talk about summer clouds, thunderstorms and temperatures. Learning about Summer safety while swimming and playing outside,  in a storm, and protecting ourselves from the sun and insects will be talked about.

Learning about our state of New Hampshire and it's resources is May's topic! We will talk about our mountains and rivers and the towns we live in.  We will learn about many places to visit in New Hampshire this summer!

LANGUAGE ARTS...Each week we continue with a new story in Reading and Comprehension skills. We will do a Paper Bag Book Report this month! A paper bag is decorated to represent the story and the bag is filled with items that pertain to the story. It is then presented to the class!

New Spelling words continue to be introduced and a dictation and spelling test is given weekly.

We are learning about beginning and ending blends and consonant digraphs in Phonics.  Review on short and long vowels continues. Daily sentence writing and focusing on sentence beginnings and endings, detailed sentences using adjectives that make sentences interesting will continue!

1M Arrives into April!

CoolSpring, Spring

a wonderful thing!

Flowers are blooming and birds are on wing.

Children are playing so carefree today.

And the sunshine is shinging all through the day!Cool

And our learning continues....

RELIGION... We will talk about what it means to be a peacemaker and how Jesus wants us to live as one.  Learning about the right and wrong choice and that God always forgives us will be discussed.  We will learn about the sacraments of Reconcilation and Eucharist.

MATH... Measurement with inches and centimeters is introduced. Using a thermometer and learning about temperature is learned.  Two digit addition and subtraction without regrouping will be a focus this month!  We always continue work on our basic addition and subtraction facts.

SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES... weather and weather vocabulary, seeds and plants and parts of plants is learned.  We will talk about Earth Day and how it is important to protect our natural resources.  We will discuss the importance of recycling.

LANGUAGE ARTS... R controlled vowels, "ed" and "ing" endings, verbs in the present and past, comparision endings er and est will be part of our learning.  We continue to study weekly Spelling words.  Each week we have a dictation sentence test and a spelling test. A new story is introduced weekly in our Pearson reading series and we read it together and use the online componant as a supplement.  Poetry and working on an "Animal" poem for our Poetry Slam this month  will be a fun learning experience!

Spring has sprung and we are always springing into new things to learn!
