Welcome to First Grade! First Grade is a wonderful grade. The children are fun, creative, challenging and so eager to learn. The most rewarding part of this grade is having all the children reading and writing by the end of the year. The love of reading is the goal in my classroom! 

I have had the honor of being a First Grade teacher at St. Christopher's for over 30 years! I have had the pleasure of teaching the children of my former students! My husband and I live in Nashua and I have two adult daughters. We have two cats!

2018  wiil be filled with learning, fun and friends in 1M!

And the learning continues...

RELIGION...We continue learning about the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Trinity.  We will begin discussion about the parts of the Mass and will touch upon the season of Lent at the end of the month. Lent begins on February 14.

MATH...Grouping of  tens and ones up to 100 is our focus! We will use tens and ones sticks at our desks, and magnetic strips at the board to help us understand this concept.  We continue to learn addition and subtraction facts more quickly by counting up and down or forward and backward.  Continuing to use EXTRAMATH.com helps reinforce this!

LANGUAGE ARTS...new Spelling words are introduced weekly.  We will be adding more words...up to 15 total!  The class practices reading and spelling these.  Each week we have a spelling dictation test to understand word meanings in sentences and a spelling test.

In  Phonics we are learning long vowels, their rules and spellings, and using them in context.

Each week we work on a new story in our Reading Street Pearson reading program.  We learn new vocabulary, story genre, author's purpose, and English concepts such as sentence structure, nouns and verbs and other concepts.  We use our Reader's writer's Notebook to reinforce these concepts.  We use our hardcopy anthology and the online program daily.

SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES...Martin Luther King, Snowflake Bently and the discovery of snoflake shapes, animals in hibernation and winter storms will be our topics!

ALSO...We will begin to work on our St. Christopher Annual Auction Project and talk about our STEM Fair project!

December is magical in 1M!!!

The magic, awe, and excitement of Jesus' birth and Santa coming  are two wonderful things about first grade!

But...the learning continues...I hope!!!

RELIGION...We focus on Advent , the 4 weeks of preparation and waiting for Jesus' birthday!

We are learning about The Holy Spirit...the 3rd person of the Blessed Trinity and how the Holy Spirit came to Jesus' Apostles on Pentecost.

MATH...We continue with Fact Families(making 4 facts from the same 3 numbers,2 addition and 2 subtraction).

2+3=5

3+2=5

5-2=3

5-3=2

We will work on estimation, place value of digits, and continue to learn our addition and subtraction facts by counting forward and backwards.

LANGUAGE ARTS...Consonant Blends, interrogitive and declarative sentences, and completing short vowels are our focus.  We will also go more into depth on story plots, beginnings and middles and ends of stories.  We will talk about Book Reports and do one together as a class!

Social Studies/Science...We will use the Scholastic online Interactive site to learn about Christmas and Hannukah!  We will discuss animal habitats in winter and the changing of the seasons.

November is Nifty in 1M!!!

Thanksgiving Day is almost here.

We eat turkey every year!

Go, hide out in the woods!

We'll eat pizza as we should!

It is almost time for our annual "Disguise Mr. Turkey"  Family Project!

This is our 20 th year of our Grade 1 turkey project!  We cannot wait to see the creative disguised Turkeys!  Please visit the bulletin board outside of 1M during Conferences!

 

RELIGION...We continue learning about the Church Year.  Now we are discussing Ordinary Time and will learn about ADVENT as November continues.  Each Friday we use our PROMISE magazine that teaches us about the weekly Sunday Gosple.

MATH...Addition facts continue and we will be beginning subtraction.  Part of our Math program involves reading story problems and understanding the addition or subtraction fact that goes with it. a fact is always needed to find the answer.  The class uses EXTRAMATH.COM and IXL to reinforce Math concepts taught.

 

LANGUAGE ARTS... New Weekly Spelling words, Spelling dictation tests and Spelling tests continue each week.  The students learn to Read, Spell and understand the meanings of the words.We continue our short vowel sounds and dwell on short vowel families that help us read and make new words.  Nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs, subject and predicate parts of sentences are being learned in our Pearson Reading Program.  We use it daily online and use our hardcopy anthology and Readers Writers Notebook Practice book!

 

SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES...The first Thanksgiving and the journey from England to Plimouth is our highlight!  We use the SCHOLASTIC virtual field trip.  Each week we receive a letter from a pilgrim travelling on the Mayflower.  Once ther reach America, we learn about the Pilgrim Village and the Wampanog Indian Village.
