Home Students Classroom Pages Grade 1 - Mrs. Moore Onward into October in 1M

Onward into October in 1M

The month of September was a great month to start Grade 1! We celebrated Johnny Appleseed's birthday and made applesauce.  We had 2 visits with our Grade 6E buddies. The first was to shop at the Book Fair, the second was to play on the playground with them! We started reading in our new Reading series "Reading Street" . We completed Short a in Phonics. We have had 2 WWW checkups(Spelling) . The class has learned our first words very well!  We are using Spellingcity.com to practice at home!  We have learned about The Holy Family in Religion.

The new season of Fall brings many new things for us to learn. The Holy Family and Jesus growing up will continue to be a topic in religion. We are learning the differences and similarities between our family and Jesus' family.  In Math we are starting addition. We will be using our Eno board to make groups of Virtual Manipulatives to add together. Along with this we will be using manipulatives at our desks for hands on experience. Flash cards will be sent home to practice learning the facts to 10. We will read and do Math story problems together and find how to solve them.  Phonics will lead us into short i.  We sing songs about our vowels and read short vowel stories.  Our reading series complements Phonics with short vowel stories and spelling short vowel words. Our weekly WWW are taken from our reading stories.  Soon, short vowel books will be sent home with the children to read to a family member and then return the book to school when completed.  We work together on reading practice pages on vocabulary, nouns, verbs and adjectives. We continue to learn about Fiction, Realistic Fiction and Non Fiction stories.  We often sing along with a wonderful noun and verb video!  Music is a wonderful learning tool!  On the note of Music...each morning we practice singing a Patriotic American song.  The class is doing well singing!  We will continue to learn about Living and Non Living  things in science.  We will also be learning about spiders in Science.  I am reading "Charlotte's Web" to the class and we have already learned some interesting facts about spiders!  We will have a visit from the fire department this month and will talk about Fire Safety in Social Studies.  And of course, Halloween is a highlight of October!  We will meet with our 6E buddies to make a milk carton "Haunted House".  We will celebrate  in our class with a craft and healthy snacks  with the help of our Room Moms and other parents at the end of the month!

Fall is here!  The leaves are falling!  I think I hear The Great Pumpkin calling!

Enjoy the month of October...the turkeys will be arriving before we know it!  Stay tuned!
