January News

Happy 2012!

Fifty-two weeks or twelve months in a year,

As each month ends, a new one is here.

The days in a year come to three hundred sixty-five.

Isn’t it great to be alive?

In Religion, we will be discussing following God’s laws and the gift of free will. We will be learning about the Sacrament of Forgiveness and the steps to receive Penance and Reconciliation. Throughout the month, 2-W students will continue practicing addition when regrouping is necessary. We will then begin subtracting tens and ones with regrouping and finally adding to check subtraction differences.

In Phonics we will continue working on our decoding skills. We will learn about syllables (word parts), sounds of wr, kn as well as assessing consonant blends, and digraphs. We will read stories about mice, snakes and spiders in our reading series.

We will learn about Martin Luther King Jr. and his famous I Have a Dream speech. We will also discuss the concepts of peace and justice in the world.

January is sure to be a busy month! I’m sure the children will be sharing many of the things we are doing in school with their families!

I hope everyone had a wonderful New Year!

God Bless You,

Mrs. Walley

December Celebrations

Happy_Holidays_2

Every year at just this time,

In cold and dark December,

Families around the world

All gather to remember,

With presents and with parties,

With feasting and with fun,

Customs and traditions

for people old and young.

In December the Second Grade students will be learning about numerous winter holidays and celebrations around the world.  The children will read about traditions and customs, color pictures, sing songs, and make crafts from many different countries.  They will have their seasonal passports stamped as they "travel" to Holland, Mexico, France, Sweden, Poland, and England.

They will discover about Diwali, Kwanza, Hanukkah and Christmas too!  It will surely be an exciting season of discovery in 2W.
