October News
It is hard to believe that September is over already! The class has adjusted very nicely to the changes that third grade brings. We have had some first big tests and they have shown me they are up for the challenge. They are eager to learn!
We met with our Pre-K(Landry) buddies last week for the first time. The themed activity was fall leaves! We had so much fun helping out the "little ones!" The 3rd grade thought all of the Pre-K was "just so cute!" We plan to meet once a month for some fun!
There is some material that we are learning now that will carry us into October, and of course a lot of new things as well!
Math: We just started addition with more than 2 addends. This is a bit of a review from last year, but we are building on the basic addition facts with estimating to the nearest ten and hundred, and regrouping. In order to recall the facts quicker, we like to play fun math games and work problems on the white board. Addition with larger numbers will soon follow, so we need to brush up on the basics! Brainpop Jr. is a favorite resource as another learning tool in our math lessons. It shows some creative ways along with humor, to make math more enjoyable for some.
Religion: We continuing our theme of living the way Jesus wants us to. Discussion continues of the disciples through stories. We will be starting to do role playing and jugdging whether or not Jesus would be happy with our choices, and discuss ways to make better choices. New vocabulary words are taught with each lesson. In the next few lessons we will be learning how the church began and how it grew. We will also do a few art pieces on "listening to Jesus" and "Heaven."
Social Studies: We are continuing the theme of different communities. We just began learning about rural, suburban, and urban communities. We will "travel" to Bridgewater, VA--Levittown, NY--Chicago, IL. We will be classifying features of each community to see how they are alike and different. Because geography is a large piece of social studies, we will be studying maps of the 3 places and learn about what people enjoy about their community. We will learn about the different celebrations and compare the ethnic and cultural differences.
Language Arts: Our second reading unit is about to begin entitled "Wonders of the Sea." We will read many adventure stories! Vowel sounds are the highlight in phonics this month. Grammar has us busy with nouns, verbs, and different kinds of sentences. For spelling, just a reminder to check out SpellingCity.com for a review of those weekly spelling words!
At the end of this month, we will be having a Halloween party. I will let you know more details soon!
Also, 3G's first book report will be assigned soon. The book must be a chapter book with no less than 100 pages.
As always, my door is always open if you have a question or concern!
