Grade 3 - Mrs. Labrecque

Angela_Hilton

Mrs. Labrecque has had twelve happy years teaching kindergarten and first grade. She also enjoyed teaching summer school to third graders for two years while living in Maryland and North Carolina. She enjoyed it so much that she decided to take it on here at St. Christopher when the position became available. This will be Mrs. Labrecque's second year as a 3rd grade teacher!

February Highlights

FEBRUARY HIGHLIGHTS

Mrs. Labrecque's class has a lot of fun things going on in Reading and English. As we read selections about the environment, we will study cause and effect relationships. We will also use Curious George stories to identify causes and effects. Our writing topics this month include stories about Groundhog's Day, rhyming books for our buddies, and stories about Super Heroes that fight to protect our planet. We will also be periodically visiting the library on Fridays to learn about encyclopedias and reference books.

We are finishing up our science unit on forces and motion. We've been having fun making various simple machines such as inclined planes, pulleys, and levers. Our next unit on natural resources will blend nicely with our environmental theme in reading. We will illustrate various types of resources as well as cut them out of magazines. We will even examine the various resources used in The Story of the Three Little Pigs.

Our next units in religion focus on vocations followed by the sacraments. We will have the opportunity to write about what we imagine our life would be like in a religious vocation. Later in the month we will make a booklet of the sacraments.

Thanks for visiting our site and have a great month  Smile.

January News

Third graders will be very busy in Science this month. We will begin the month by learning about the earth's surface and changes that can affect it such as earthquakes and volcanoes. Then we will move on to forces and motion. We will use plastic balls to study the effects of friction and force on moving objects. We will test magnets to see which poles attract one another. We'll even get to observe how magnetic forces can travel through solid objects as well as water. Later in the month we will study the effects of simple machines on force and motion. Using classroom materials we will make various simple machines. We will make inclined planes and study the relationship between height, distance, and speed.

Our Religion classes are also keeping us busy. We just finished learning about the four marks of the Catholic Church as well as leaders in the Church and their roles. We will begin the month learning about the meaning of the Apostle's Creed and Catholic Social Teaching. Moving forward, we will discuss the different types of prayer. We will get to survey our friends on their favorite prayers as well as their favorite places to pray.

We will be studying folk tales from around the world in our literature series. As we do so we will use our wonderful Eno boards to pull up maps of where the stories take place as well as pictures and clips of the animals and people in these regions. This will surely boost comprehension as well as the interest of the children. It will also help lay the foundation for creative writing experiences.

We are still plugging away at our times tables in Math. We will also be using hands on manipulatives as well as our Kidspiration computer program to explore concepts in division.

Thank you for visiting our web page. See you next month!

Dec 2011

Winter Highlights

The upcoming month lends itself to many exciting writing activities. We will be writing letters to characters in stories we are reading. We will write letters to Santa explaining to him why we would make good elves. We will also write a letter to him explaining why we think we deserve to be put on his "good list." We will write about what gift we would have given baby Jesus if we had visited him.

Lots of interesting things will be going on in Science as well. Mrs. Labrecque will be bringing in lots of rocks in for the classes to examine with magnifying glasses. We will spend lots of time comparing and conrasting the different varieties of rocks. We will learn about the process of weathering by shaking various rocks vigorously to observe how different rocks wear down at different rates. We will also explore the different types of soil. We will use sifters to determine which soils are better suited for planting based on their ability to hold water. We will also demonstrate the effects of erosion.

We will continue to work on multiplication in math. We will have the opportunity to play lots of games in class to help us learn our multiplication facts. We will be visiting multiplication.com in the mornings to work on our facts as well.

In religion, we are discussing how we can prepare for the coming of Christ during the Advent season. We are anxiously awaiting December 6th so that we can come to school dressed as our favorite saint. We are illustrating how Christmas is a season for giving as we prepare to make gifts for our pre kindergarten buddies and assist with projects. Our next chapter discusses the marks of our Catholic faith. We will continue to visit our textbook's web site, webelieveweb.com for extra games and activities.
