Once again, hello and welcome to third grade. We have a great year lined up. Mrs. Labrecque's favorite subject is Science. We will be getting our hands dirty as we do several hands on activities with plants. We will explore how each individual part is vital to its well being. Third graders will observe what happens to a plant that has no stem. Then we will observe roots in action using a celery stalk. We begin learning about photosynthesis as we test the effects of sunlight and darkness on leaves. We'll even see oxygen being released from plant leaves when immersed in water!
Our first theme in Reading is "Creative Imaginations." Each story focuses on how the main characters use their imagination. We will relate to these characters as in our writing as we use our own imaginations to compose letters and paragraphs throughout the unit. Our English skills will certainly help us in this endeavor as we learn about types of sentences this month. We will also be practicing dictionary skills as we examine new vocabulary words from the stories.
As always we will be using our wonderful Eno boards to make our subject areas come to life. We've already used them to see clips of "Schoolhouse Rock" to learn about government so that we could pass our own Third Grade Bill of Rights. We will often visit educational sites in the mornings after we have completed our morning work. Don't forget to visit spellingcity.com in your spare time to help improve your child's spelling skills.
