Fall Update

What a fluke of nature the October 29 nor'eastern was.  As I sit writing this update, I am more than thankful that my neighborhood was without power for only two days.  We are now into our third day of no school.  I pray that everyone is safe and warm as the service companies get everyone reconnected and make sure power lines are no longer a danger.

As you can see, October was a busy month with much to learn.  It looks like November will follow the same course.  We will begin with a study of the Liturgical Year of the Church.  During Advent, we will learn of the many symbols on the Jesse tree.  During this time of preparing and waiting for the Messiah, we hope to focus on kind acts, and some activities will center around the Advent theme.

Math is a continuation of perfecting our multiplication skills.  We are now dealing with 2-digit multipliers and the different properties of multiplication.  To further our knowledge, we will be doing fact families, so that when we go into division, our journey will be easier.  Of course we still review addition and subtraction.

We have finished the noun chapter in English.  The test, scheduled for November 3, will be postponed until Monday, November 7.  Although all concepts have been taught, I'd like a big review to pull all nouns together.  Then we will start our study of pronouns -- subject and object pronouns; first, second, and third person pronouns; and possessive pronouns.  Throughout the month we will still be working on forming better sentences.

There will be no usual November book report.  A science project will be assigned, so I plan on having children write summaries on readings we do in school.  As a model, we may create a summary together on the book I will be finishing soon --INTO THE LAND OF THE UNICORNS by Bruce Coville .

Social Studies will focus on the Northeast, its history, landforms, and resources.  We will be responsible for knowing the states and capitals, and we will be doing some map work.  Since it is November, we will talk about the first Thanksgiving and do some activity around the Pilgrims and Indians.

As a reminder, since we are works in progress and sometimes have difficulty in a certain subject, I encourage the students to correct errors on very low grades and pass the papers back to me.  If I can boost the grades a few extra points, it helps with the averages.

Finally, we want to see our buddies in KB.  We  love watching Tumblebooks with them.  I'm sure we will do a cute activity focusing on Thanksgiving.  Mrs. Brown and I will coordinate our schedules.  This is one wonderful asset to our school year.  We don't want to neglect it.
