Fall into October
Well it is offically Autumn. But it still feels like summer here in 5M.
We have been busy learning about the classification of plants, animals, fungi, protists, eubacteria, and archaebacteria. The students learned about vertebrates and invertebrates. They are still working on beating the clock to place organisms into the correct places on an activity using our eno boards. This will lead up to their test in late September.
Next we will be exploring about different types of cells. We will be learning the differences in plant cells and animal cells, blood cells, muscle cells, nerve cells which will lead to tissues, organs, and organ systems. The students will make a couple of flipbooks to help in studying the various characteristics of the blood and cells. They will have a test on Chap. 2 in the middle of October. This will then take us on a journey into our bodies and some of the systems that control our lives. During studying Chapter 3, the students will be given a project about the different systems. They will pick one of the choices given and make a model, poster, or life size outline of themselves. The project will have a 3D component to it. More information will follow once we start the chapter.
The sixth grade will be finishing up Chapter 8 in late September. They have learned about the forces that move our continents, make our Earth shake, how mountains are formed, and how volcanoes shape our landscapes. Then they will be sailing onto the "Oceans". They will have many hands on activities, some videos, and a fun culminating activity. They will learn about the whole ocean, tides, density currents, waves, water movement, and ocean life.
Don't forget spellingcity.com to help with spelling. It has some fun games to help the students.
In Reading we will read about the myth King Midas in play form, about an amazing child who over came a disability, and a fiction story about friendship.
We will visit with our buddies in 2W again and share a Halloween activity. Speaking of Halloween our party will be on Oct. 31 at 2:00 in the afternoon
.
October's book report will be due November 4 and the genre is Mystery.
We will be preparing for the October 7 Mass at St. Christopher. I hope that you will be able to join 5M as we celebrate the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary at 9:15am.
Have a great Fall!!
Mrs. Mitchell
