Gobble, Gobble
Well, it looks like Mother Nature started this month off with her own “Trick” or perhaps for some it was a “Treat”. With the four missed school days, I can say that I truly relieved my childhood with all the crafts and board games. It does make you realize how much we rely on electronics. I must admit, I very much enjoyed the time my family spent playing together.
With that said, we are back in business. For about the next 8 weeks, we will have a student teacher, Miss Anna Cooper, teaching with us. She will eventually teach all four math classes. Miss Cooper has been with us for about a week and a half observing how I teach the math class and creating her own lesson plans using our text book. She has jumped right into preparing lessons for the fifth grade. We are starting our very long fractions unit. We begin by using divisibility rules to identify prime and composite numbers. Then we work on factors and finding prime factorization using factor trees. Miss Cooper will be bringing in different math games that deal with finding the greatest common factor. I can’t wait to see what she has come up with. Next we will be simplifying fractions, so keep up the great work with maintaining knowledge of the multiplication table. You will need it.
In sixth grade we are finishing the unit on order of operations. We have worked hard using PEMDAS (Parenthesis, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction) to make sure we solve multi-step math problems correctly. We also use the mnemonic Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. Then we will begin a unit on positive and negative integers. We will have to add, subtract, multiply and divide integers.
In Religion we created a Liturgical Year Journey Staff. We studied the Catholic calendar and illustrated pictures to depict each season. Using a stick, we attached our illustrations to remind us of the order of the Liturgical Year. It came out beautifully. We have also created cinquain and haiku poems about the patriarchs from the Bible and Ordinary Time. We continue to study people, places and events from the Old Testament. We will be studying about Moses and God’s plan for him and the Israelites for the next few weeks.
Our adopted sister is Sr. Marilyn, and she will be visiting on Wednesday the 9th. She is a wonderful adopted sister, and we enjoyed her visits last year.
We are creating book covers for our October Book Report. For the month of November, your child should be reading a book from the biography genre. The book needs to be read by November 30th. Remember, every Friday we have a Literature test on the weekly story.
Your child has a Spelling chapter every week. We do not skip around in the book; we go in order. We will have chapters 10 – 12 this month. Spelling words can be found in www.spellingcity.com, if the book is forgotten. The spelling test is every Friday. Monday they write their spelling list 3 times each. Tuesday they complete an activity, and Wednesday they complete the three pages found in the text. All Spelling work is due on Thursday for a grade.
Don’t forget that Parent Teacher Conferences are held on November 22nd. November 23rd is a half day. Students need to be picked up by 12:30, and there is no afterschool care. November 24 – 27th is our Thanksgiving break. I hope everyone has an enjoyable, relaxing time.
