October News from 6W
September was a very productive month in this classroom. Geography has been the focus in both Grade Five and Grade Six Social Studies. Students practiced map skills in both grades by completing original maps and charts on the Regions of the United States in Grade Five and World Regions in Grade Six.
Each sixth grade student has chosen a European country to research for one semester. They will complete several activities on their countries in the upcoming months. A major project will be assigned after the Christmas vacation. The first activity, a map of their country, has been turned in and will be on display in our hallways. We have some very talented cartographers in the Class of 2012!
The fifth grade will complete a similar activity with their chosen state. Hand drawn maps of the state are due on October 7th. Directions for this activity should be in each student’s notebook and must be signed by a parent. Thank you!
Jeopardy tryouts are over and our teams for the tournament are in place. Congratulations to all those who made the team! Thank you to former 6W student, Brennan Riley, who helped me with this on a recent visit to the school.
Another former student, Christian Carpino, dropped by to share his story of his summer job as a chef for the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park!!
Both grades will learn about elections this month in preparation for Student Council elections on the first Tuesday of November. Four students will be elected from each of the four homerooms. We will have some new voices over the intercom to assist Mrs. Clarke with her morning announcements.
Our study of Creation moves on to the history of the Israelites, the People of God. October is the Month of the Holy Rosary, so we will be studying the Mysteries of the Rosary as well.
October’s book is an adventure or mystery. The teacher approved book should be completed by October 31st, just in time for our class Halloween party. Students are asked to bring in the treats the will sign up for, and this teacher will lead the fun and games!
Enjoy the beautiful days of fall!
