October News

The month of October brings in a new season to celebrate...Fall! It is a beautiful time of year with the changes in color, brisk weather and fall activities for all to enjoy.  In the classroom the lessons relate to the season, trees and squirrels, pumpkins and fire safety.

In phonics the letters are E, F, G and H. The journals are becoming colorful with illustrations and beginning writing skills are being practiced using letters and sounds. Learning centers have been introduced and are used twice a week.  It is a concept the children really enjoy. There are 6 varied educational centers with teacher directed lessons and hands on activities. This allows and helps to meet the needs of each student.

In math, comparisons and patterns are the focus. This is a fun concept to learn for the class and they find patterns everywhere! Also, as an enrichment activity, I am requesting each child collects a small amount of a variety of fall items such as acorns, leaves and pinecones and bring them into class to use and share in math and science. This enhances the excitement of hands on learning with materials from nature!

In science, examine and name parts of "unbe-leaf-able" leaves and investigate acorns .We will also explore the many properties of a pumpkin before we scoop the pulp and carve it into a jack-o-lantern. We will also experiment with fall planting of our apple and pumpkin seeds.

October is also Fire Prevention month. We look foward to the annual visit from the Nashua Firefighters who will teach the importance of fire safety. They will come to our school on Wednesday, November 2nd.

The character trait is being 'truthful'.  The lion who is strong and brave teaches how telling the truth is important but not always easy. An important trait to learn and practice.

We have met our 4th grade buddies in Mrs. Mendel's class during the book fair as they assisted the class with their wish lists. They also enjoyed a movie together about Johnny Appleseed. We hope to get together once a month!

A special thank you to Kristen Capone who has graciously volunteered to be th Room Parent for the class. She will be contacting you through e-mail for volunteers for parties, class supplies or projects if you signed up on the volunteer sheet.  Thank you for giving of your time and talents.  Also, thank you parents for sending in the apples.  As a class, we prepared the apples, measured the ingredients and cooked the appples in a crock pot.  It was enjoyed by most and some wanted seconds....yummy!! The apple taste test was also a learning experience that was enjoyed. Four types were tasted and later we graphed the results. The favorite was...granny smith.

A Halloween party is planned for Friday, October 28th.  As a festive idea, "Hat Day" is the theme. This is a creative project done at home and made together with your child which they will wear at school and for the party. Have fun and we look foward to seeing all the wonderful Hats!! (We thank Miss Narkis for sharing this creative idea!)
