Kindergarten - Miss Narkis

Welcome to Kindergarten! If you have any questions or concerns, please send me in a note with your child.

I have been part of the teaching staff here at St. Chris for over 15 years and love it. I also taught for 10 years in the public school prior to coming to St. Chris. My whole career has focused on the early childhood years. I find that kindergarten is a challenging but very fun level to teach and at St. Chris I’m pleased to be able to include a spiritual component to my teaching.

Mrs. Irene Foran is the Kindergarten aide for Miss Narkis.

May-June class news 2017

sea_shell_collection_003aaaIt is the beautiful month of May and we only have six more weeks of school remaining!  We will be very busy during this time with many exciting events taking place.  May is the month of our Blessed Mother Mary so we will be learning about what makes her special. It is also the 100th year anniversary of Mary's apparition at Fatima, Portugal so the children will learn what her message was and how to recite the Rosary.

We will begin our final unit of the year on the ocean!  This is always a favorite with the children and it will give them exposure to everything from seashells to sharks!  This picture depicts my shell collection which I will be sharing with the class in the coming weeks.

In the area of math, we wil be covering a chapter on time and money.  The children have already been applying some basic knowledge of coin identification and value when they purchase school snacks.  We will cover pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters as an introduction.  We also will learn to tell time by the hour using both analog and digital clocks.

Virtue is the last character trait for the year, which nicely ties together everything that we have learned thus far.  Virtue involves making good, moral choices in order to live a clean, healthy and holy life. There is always something that we can be working on.

There are many things going on this month, so here are some dates to mark on your calendars:

May 12  used book sale church hall (KN goes at 1:40pm)

May 16  Consecration to Mary field trip

May 19  May crowning 9:15 church

May 26  Field day- Fun run 12:40pm

May 29  Memorial day-no school

May 31  Spring concert 10:00am church

* June 9th is our last day of kindergarten.  We will be having a class beach party and then later that morning, all parents are invited to come watch our little surprise performance.  Please mark your calendars for FRIDAY, JUNE 9, 11:30am.  This is an EARLY RELEASE day with NO AFTERCARE for kindergarten, so please plan accordingly.

I can't believe how fast the year is wrapping up, however we still have lots of great things to experience before it all ends.  I'm looking forward to seeing you throughout the coming weeks.  Cool

April Class News! 2017

HAPPY EASTER!

easter-clipart-Happy-easter-google-clipart_aaWe have been focusing on the passion of Jesus through the Lenten season and now it is time to celebrate the joy of the resurrection.  It seems that Spring has arrived with budding pussywillows and blossoming children!  The children are not only growing academically, but they are taller and teeth are falling out on a daily basis. Laughing

We have recently begun working with word families.  The children continue to speed read their high frequency words and have been putting together their own sentences!  This is a very exciting step in applying the skills that they have worked hard to master.  We will be writing sentences from now on and we will also continue with SSR (sustained silent reading).  This is a 15 minute personal reading time done alone or together with a partner.  This will become part of our daily routine and will further encourage a love of books and reading.

This month's character trait is sincerity which means that we should have transparent motives in all that we do.  We will be discussing the difference between being genuine and being fake or doing things for selfish gain.

This month we will begin learning about money. This will involve identifying pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters and learning the values of each.  This is where our base counting will come in handy as we begin counting coins.

This month is going to be short and fast, but full of more learning, fun, and some great school events!  Hopefully April will end with a warm, sunny vacation for all to enjoy.

Have a Blessed Easter!

March News 2017

animated-march-clipart-1_aaHAPPY MARCH!  It is hard to believe that it will be Spring in a few weeks.  It is such a hopeful time of year that is full of life and growth.  The children have grown so much since September and I continue to enjoy watching them increase in their abilities.

The week that we return from February break will include our STEM day.  The children worked in small groups to meet an engineering objective and they all successfully accomplished the task!  They loved engaging in whatever role they each played in contributing to their group.  All four groups will have their creations on display on STEM night.  (Thurs. 3/9)

We will be learning about the season of Lent this month which begins on Ash Wednesday.  The children will participate in the Stations of the Cross each Friday afternoon during Lent.  This is a nice way for them to remember the sacrificial love of Jesus and spend some time reflecting on His precious gift of salvation.

Forgiveness is this month's character trait which is ultimately demonstrated by Jesus on the cross, at which time He asked forgiveness for those who were killing Him.  We have numerous opportunities in life to exercise forgiveness and the children are very good about showing mercy and forgiveness to each other.

We will reach the end of the alphabet this month so Zebulan zebra will be our last letter friend.  From this time forward, we will be studying weekly word families.  We will continue to work on reading and writing skills and word work activities.  The children love adding to our list of HFW and enjoy practicing them in class.

Our new unit on rocks and minerals will be lots of fun as the children will learn about the three basic categories of rocks and get their hands on some real gems!  Children seem to naturally enjoy collecting and examining rocks so they should enjoy the numerous activities I have planned for them.

I hope everyone returns to school healthy and happy and ready for a great month of learning and growing!  HAPPY SPRING! Laughing
