Kindergarten - Miss Narkis

Welcome to Kindergarten! If you have any questions or concerns, please send me in a note with your child.

I have been part of the teaching staff here at St. Chris for 13 years and love it. I also taught for 10 years in the public school prior to coming to St. Chris. My whole career has focused on the early childhood years. I find that kindergarten is a challenging but very fun level to teach and at St. Chris I’m pleased to be able to include a spiritual component to my teaching.

Mrs. Irene Foran is the Kindergarten aide for Miss Narkis.

Happy February!

Happy Catholic Schools Week!

This is a short and sweet month that will begin with a very fun and exciting week! We will celebrating what makes our school different from most others –our Catholic beliefs.  As you have seen from the weeks’ schedule that went home, there are many special events planned for the children.  It all begins with a Mass at 9:15 on Monday.  Hope to see you there!

This month will also be full of new discoveries as we blast off into outer space and take a look at our solar system.  The children are excited to learn about each planet and we will be making our own solar system to hang off the classroom ceiling.  The children will also get to watch two different rocket demonstrations that I always include in this unit.

We continue to practice daily phonics and apply it to class activities involving reading and phonetic spelling.  Word labeling and simple sentences are part of our journal entries now that we are becoming more skilled.

In math we have learned to tally and compare groups of objects making them greater than, less than or equal.  We are focusing on numbers in the teens and beyond to thirty as we sequence them according to symbols, values and even words!  We have pretty much mastered rote counting by 10’s and 5’s and continue to practice base 2.  Our first computer class with Mrs. Tassoni was a great success and she was very impressed with the skills the children already have.  We look forward to our next session this month on the 17th.

As you know we will have our Valentines’ Day party on the 14th.  Thanks to all who signed up to send in party items and to those who will be coming in to help. Just as a reminder… PLEASE do not address the valentines with names, just have your children sign them.   With such a large number of children it is so much easier for them to hand their valentines out.  THANKYOU!

*Please remember to sign your child’s report card and return it to school.

Have a wonderful winter break!    (Feb. 27- Mar 2)

Class News January 2012

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas break.  The children seemed happy to be back and are ready to get busy learning about our next topic which is about life in the Arctic and  Antartica.  We will be exploring the various animals which live in these amazing climates such as penguins, seals, polar bears, walrus, puffins, arctic fox and reindeer.  Through books and film the children will be able to understand some of the ways these animals are specially equipped to survive in such harsh environments.  We also will find out about the Inuit people who still live in these climates and learn some  interesting things about their culture.

In the area of math, we will be learning how to tally and make the correct marks to record numbers.  We also will be spending a good deal of time becoming more familiar with numbers beyond ten and comparing values.  (more, less, equal) There are some great card and dice games that we will be playing to reinforce thsese skills during our work stations. We will continue with counting practice through 100.  Already the children are pretty good at base counting by 2, 5 and 10.  We are fast approaching our 100th day of school so there are a couple fun activities planned for that day and of course we will  love going to visit the first graders to see their collections of 100 things!

As we work our way through the alphabet, we will be focusing on correct letter formation as well as spacing between words when writing.  We will continue to apply phonics to our journal writing and some children will be working on writing simple sentences.  This is such an exciting time of year when a lot seems to come together for the children and wonderful progress is being made.

We will have our first computer class with Mrs. Tassoni on January 20th!  The children will have their first exposure to the Eno boards---very exciting!

January brings "orderliness" with it as our new character trait.  This a great one for those of you who want a little help getting your children to keep things organized.  Organization allows us to achieve the greatest efficiency and also produces inner peace as opposed to the tension caused by clutter.

Thank you all for everything you do to support our program and our school.  Your generosity is a wonderful example to your children and is very much appreciated! Smile

Class News December 2011

Ho Ho Ho Here we go! Laughing Today is the first day of December and we will begin this exciting season with Christmas shopping with our fifth grade buddies!  We have been looking forward to participating in this great St. Chris tradition.  Thanks to all you hard working volunteers.  We will be glad to have you with us today!  The season of Advent and Christmas will be our focus in the coming weeks.  We already learned about and assembled our class Advent wreath and will soon set up the Nativity as well as hear the story of Christ's birth.  Generosity is the character trait for December which ties in nicely with our Faith Outreach project for Meals on Wheels.  The children will create a laminated book mark with a picture of baby Jesus on the front and a Biblical quote on the back. (John 3:16)

We are working hard on number sequencing, identification and values beyond ten.  One of our favorite games to reinforce these skills is called "Santa, Santa Can You Find The Present?".  It requires the children to identify numbers and move up and down the number line.  We will also be practicing writing our last names and we will be attempting to remember the rule about spacing.

I would like to thank all of you for coming to conference with me about your child.  It's great to be working closely with you to provide for the individual needs of your little ones.  I appreciate all you do to support what we are trying to accomplish on this level by mixing skill building with fun and an enthusiasm for learning.

The following is a list of up coming dates and events to look forward to so mark your calendars!

Dec. 1   Christmas shopping with buddies (1:30-2:00) in the church hall

Dec. 8   Mass (9:15)  Immaculate Conception

Dec. 13  Christmas concert (10:00am- church)

Dec. 23  Class Christmas party (early dismissal-12:30pm)-no lunch / no aftercare

A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!!
