Class News September 2011
We have only been in school a few days and the children have already settled in and made themselves comfortable. I have many happy and eager learners to work with this year and I am pleased to share in their enthusiasm.
As the months unfold, we will be covering many academic skills, exploring themes, developing virtues through our character program, having fun with our 5th grade buddies, maturing socially through peer interaction and games and much, much, more! For the month of September we will be covering the first few letters of the alphabet, spending time learning the proper uppercase and lower case formation, as well as the sounds of each letter. Phonics skills will continue to be explored and strongly practiced throughout this year to help the children with their future reading. We will also begin reviewing numbers 1-10 while learning the proper formation of numbers 0-9. Graphing, sequencing, and patterning will also be included in our math activities.
Our themes for this month include Apples, All About Me, and The Life Cycle of a Butterfly. I was fortunate enough to find a Monarch caterpillar so we presently have a crysalis in our classroom. The children are very excited about it and a butterfly should emerge in a few days. I also brought in two baby snapping turtles that had just hatched so the children could see them. I explained that the turtles can carry germs and couldn't be handled and that their visit was short since they needed to return to the pond. They sure were cute!
The character trait for September is ATTENTIVENESS which is a great one to start with as it reminds us all how important and polite it is to pay attention. These are just a few things that we will be doing in class in the weeks ahead. Notices will be coming home with further details so be sure to check your child's folder.
Thank you all for everything you do to stay informed and to provide us with everything that we need. I'm looking forward to working with your children to help them to learn and grow both academically and spiritually.
