February 2012

Dear Parents:

January ended on an exciting note with our third special treat for completing our compliment chain.  We are happy to report that all the stuffed animals that visited our class that day were very well behaved!  As a result of their exceptional behavior when we attended the Catholic Schools Week mass this week the students earned five links to start their new chain.  This is the most links they have earned at one time! We also had a great visit from Mr. Gene, a.k.a Captain Gene, Miss Nancy’s husband.  He shared many beautiful pictures of the wildlife he saw on his trip to Prince Edward Island north of Antarctica.

More excitement will be had in February as we close our Catholic Schools week with a Pajama Day and a movie and popcorn with our buddies!  We are also only ten days away from the 100th day of preK!  We have been diligently counting our way to the 100th day since the first day of school.  The children are even getting very proficient at counting backwards.  As of now, barring any snow days, the 100th day of preK is on Valentine’s Day.  February 14th will certainly be a busy day in our class!   Passing out Valentine’s is a great way for your child to practice writing their name.  If you could please NOT have them address the envelopes that would be really helpful and a lot easier for distribution.  Thanks for your help with this.

Our themes for this month are H for Hundredths, V for Valentine’s, and X for X-Ray/XOXO.  The 100th day of school will give us plenty of opportunity to continue practicing counting by 10’s all the way to 100!  Foam heart beads are fun to not only bead with but also to sort and pattern.  We will be using Geo-boards to make our numbers from 1 to 10.  In Religion, we will learn about Saint Valentine and how to have an attitude like Jesus, helping, sharing, waiting and listening.  To help us celebrate National Dental Health Month, Nancy Schalk, a dental hygienist, will be visiting us on Wednesday, February 22nd to show us how to keep our teeth healthy and what foods can harm our teeth.

Love is in the air this month, enjoy!

January Update

We've had a busy beginning of the New Year!  It started with a visit from Father Paul and our first Spanish class with Senora B on January 3rd and we haven’t stopped!  On January 4th, we had a visit from Miss Mary, a retired kindergarten teacher and friend of Mrs. Baker’s.  She shared a fun story about snowmen with us, “Snowmen at Night”.  I bet you didn’t know snowmen have snowball fights, drink ice-cold cocoa, and make snow angels … while we are sleeping!  Miss Mary taught us all a snow song, played a game to help us recognize the sound the letter s makes and taught us a fingerplay using the snowmen she bought for each child.  What a great afternoon!

computersscarlettThis Monday we had our first computer class!  Everyone had a lot of fun spending half an hour in the computer room learning how to use pbskids.org. We will continue using this website for the rest of the month as the children get comfortable manipulating the mouse and learning the games.  As one group was using the computers another was in our class with Mrs. Baker decorating their snowmen that are displayed outside our class.computersmaddison

On Friday, January 13th, we learned who Martin Luther King, Jr. was and why we celebrate his birthday each year.  We used green, red and yellow apples to make friendship applesauce.  Like the different apples we used, we learned that all people are different on the outside and all the same on the inside, just like all apples.  As you can see from the pictures, peeling the apples was alot of fun!

January 2012

Dear Parents:

Happy New Year!  We hope you enjoyed a wonderful holiday season and a relaxing Christmas break.  January will be a fun and busy month as we start visiting the computer room in small groups on Monday afternoons to play educational games as well as begin our Spanish class on Tuesday mornings with Senora Bichrest.  In addition, Miss Mary, a retired Kindergarten teacher and friend of Mrs. Baker, will join us this Wednesday afternoon to share some snow related books.

Speaking of snow, in language arts we will be studying the letters S for snow and M for mittens.  In the middle of January we will learn about the North and South Poles and the animals that live there and even use magnets to demonstrate poles.  We have learned to write and recognize the numbers 0 to 10 so we will now continue to practice writing them.  Additionally in math, we will start to work on the skill of making comparisons by using unifix cubes, yarn, and weights.  Finally, we will celebrate Martin Luther King Day by making some friendship apple sauce, make sure you ask your child about it.

The month of January brings us the celebration of Catholic Schools Week from January 29th - February 5th.  This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: Faith.  Academics.  Service.”  More information will be coming soon about special events that week.  As part of the service portion of this year’s theme the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes will be collecting diapers from newborn to size 3 as well as baby wipes to donate to CareNet Pregnancy Center.  This agency located on Main Street in Nashua provides hope to women facing unplanned pregnancies by providing practical help and emotional support.   Donations may be sent in anytime during that week.  Thank you in advance for your help with this service project to this worthwhile agency.

Thank you so much for all the donations of candy, graham crackers and frosting for our gingerbread houses and thank you to Mrs. Osborne, her mom, Mrs. Metzger and Mrs. Dahl for helping out and taking pictures that day.  The kids had a great time making the houses and eating the leftover candy Smile!  Thank you to everyone who sent in paper products and juice boxes for our Birthday party for Jesus.  Mrs. Miller provided a yummy birthday cake and Mrs. Young made a delicious fruit salad.  Thank you very much!  Mrs. Osborne provided a great reindeer craft that day and once again our class photographer, Mrs. Dahl, took some great pictures that are posted on the school website.  Thanks again to all our parents who make our jobs so easy and enjoyable.

Enjoy the beauty of winter!

December 2011

Dear Parents:

It was great to meet all of you to discuss your child’s progress in pre-kindergarten!  Pre-K is a big step and the children have all done a fantastic job getting acclimated to school!

Welcome, Scarlett!  Scarlett recently moved to this area and joined our class just this week.

Thank you to all the parents who donated food and paper items and helped in the classroom during our Thanksgiving Feast.  We celebrated as Pilgrims and Native Americans with food from the crops of the Three Sisters; pumpkin, corn and beans.  Check out the pictures from our feast on the St. Christopher website: www.stchrisschoolnh.org.  All our classroom newsletters are also posted on the classroom page of the school website.

We celebrated the completion of our second compliment chain with a Pajama Day.  Upon their arrival to school the children sorted Trix cereal and then ate their math work!  We watched an episode of Magic School Bus during rest time and finished off our day with a couple rounds of Musical Math Chairs and Freeze Dance including learning how to spell YMCA with our armsJ.

Now the Christmas season is upon us!  We will be attending the Christmas Prayer Service on Friday, December 23rd at 9:15 am; we would love to have you join us!  This is also an early release day, the Pre-K students will be dismissed at 12:15am.

In language arts we will be studying the letters C for Christmas and J for Jesus and in math we will complete our initial study of writing and recognizing our numbers finishing with numbers 9 and 10.    Religion will be focused on the birth of Jesus and will conclude with the celebration of his birthday on Thursday, December 22nd.

On Wednesday, December 21st we will be making gingerbread houses!  Each child will need their own container of vanilla frosting, please send it in by Monday, December 19th.

We will visit with our buddies twice this month once on Friday, December 9th to work on a Christmas watercolor project and then again on Friday, December 16th for a Christmas Party.

We will be making a Christmas project with paper towel and toilet paper rolls.  By cutting and painting these rolls we can transform them into a Christmas tree so whatever rolls you can send in would be helpful.

And finally, Senora B. (Mrs. Carmen Bichrest), our Kindergarten-6th grade Spanish teacher has graciously offered to teach the children Spanish on Tuesdays starting on January 3rd.   They will learn basic Spanish words (colors, shapes, numbers,…) through songs, games and books.

Have a very blessed holiday season!

Mrs. Hauntsman and Mrs. Baker

End of November Happenings!

Hi Parents,

Lots of things are happening over the next 2 weeks and I just wanted to remind you of them. Tomorrow, Monday, November 21st, 8 Pilgrims and 8 Native Americans will be celebrating Thanksgiving in our class.  On Wednesday, November 23rd we will attend the Thanksgiving Prayer Service at 9:15am. Please join us!  Wednesday is also Crazy Sock Day!  Have your child jazz up his/her uniform with any type of crazy socks.  That day Pre-K students will be released at 12:15pm and there will be no aftercare.

The week after Thanksgiving will also be busy. Tuesday, November 29th from 6-8pm is the St. Chris night at Barnes and Noble.  Mrs. Clarke will be hosting a story time, classes will have some work on display and sing Christmas carols and our class is coloring bookmarks that will be given out with purchases. Anything purchased that night, using our school code will benefit St. Chris. An information sheet with that code was sent home earlier in the month. Come join us and get some Christmas shopping done!

The students have worked very hard to complete their second compliment chain and now that they are done (and even started their third chain) they voted, by secret Popsicle sticks, to have a Pajama Day. We will celebrate this accomplishment on Wednesday, November 30th. Please have your child wear pajamas and footwear that is both school and weather appropriate since we will still be going out for recess.

Our class will have an opportunity to shop at the Christmas gift room on Thursday, December 1st at 9am. Please make sure you send in your child's money, shopping list and gift tags on or by Dec.1st.

And finally, our Halloween Party pictures are now posted on the St. Chris school website, www.stchrisschoolnh.org.  Please check them out!

 Have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

 Mrs. Hauntsman
