January 2012

Dear Parents:

Happy New Year!  We hope you enjoyed a wonderful holiday season and a relaxing Christmas break.  January will be a fun and busy month as we start visiting the computer room in small groups on Monday afternoons to play educational games as well as begin our Spanish class on Tuesday mornings with Senora Bichrest.  In addition, Miss Mary, a retired Kindergarten teacher and friend of Mrs. Baker, will join us this Wednesday afternoon to share some snow related books.

Speaking of snow, in language arts we will be studying the letters S for snow and M for mittens.  In the middle of January we will learn about the North and South Poles and the animals that live there and even use magnets to demonstrate poles.  We have learned to write and recognize the numbers 0 to 10 so we will now continue to practice writing them.  Additionally in math, we will start to work on the skill of making comparisons by using unifix cubes, yarn, and weights.  Finally, we will celebrate Martin Luther King Day by making some friendship apple sauce, make sure you ask your child about it.

The month of January brings us the celebration of Catholic Schools Week from January 29th - February 5th.  This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: Faith.  Academics.  Service.”  More information will be coming soon about special events that week.  As part of the service portion of this year’s theme the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes will be collecting diapers from newborn to size 3 as well as baby wipes to donate to CareNet Pregnancy Center.  This agency located on Main Street in Nashua provides hope to women facing unplanned pregnancies by providing practical help and emotional support.   Donations may be sent in anytime during that week.  Thank you in advance for your help with this service project to this worthwhile agency.

Thank you so much for all the donations of candy, graham crackers and frosting for our gingerbread houses and thank you to Mrs. Osborne, her mom, Mrs. Metzger and Mrs. Dahl for helping out and taking pictures that day.  The kids had a great time making the houses and eating the leftover candy Smile!  Thank you to everyone who sent in paper products and juice boxes for our Birthday party for Jesus.  Mrs. Miller provided a yummy birthday cake and Mrs. Young made a delicious fruit salad.  Thank you very much!  Mrs. Osborne provided a great reindeer craft that day and once again our class photographer, Mrs. Dahl, took some great pictures that are posted on the school website.  Thanks again to all our parents who make our jobs so easy and enjoyable.

Enjoy the beauty of winter!

Mrs. Hauntsman and Mrs. Baker
